Action Alert: Prevent Post-TANF from being eliminated

June 15, 2011 at 4:46 am Leave a comment

Please contact your state legislators and ask them to tell the Senate
President and the Co-Speakers of the House to fund the Post-TANF program.
How TANF helps families facing
hunger:
  • TANF provides emergecy assistance to Oregon families below 60% of  the
federal poverty level, a group at very high risk for hunger.
  • TANF (Temporary Assistance for Needy Families) keeps low-income families
together through support services, job training, and temporary cash assistance
    for basic living expenses.
  • Without TANF, more children would end up in the foster care system.
  • TANF helps parents look for work and get their lives back in order.
As a member of the Oregon TANF Alliance, Oregon Food Bank has helped to
fight back some of the most egregious cuts to TANF in the state budget.
However, Post-TANF is still going to be eliminated unless we act
fast
.
Post-TANF helps keep Oregonians from returning to TANF
after leaving the program. Often TANF pariticipants will find work, but the job
might be low paying. They face increased costs for childcare, transportation,
and work clothes. Post-TANF provides $50 monthly stipend for 12 months to help
offset new costs.
