As summer approaches, the Portland Metro Roundtable will focus its June and July meetings on what area congregations are doing to address homelessness and its root causes. The calendar is now up to date.

Wednesday, June 9 – Daybreak Shelter
9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at Peace Church of the Brethren, 12727 SW. Market, Portland.
How Peace Church came to be involved in housing the shelter. Edith Ayon, Director of the Shelter, will speak  about Daybreak with a tour. Also included: a tour of the Community Garden.

Wednesday, July 14 – JOIN – New City Initiative
9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at
Father Paul Schroeder of JOIN will introduce the New City Initiative, which is an effort to engage congregations in building relationships with homeless and formerly homeless individuals and break the cycle of social isolation. For example, Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church started Greek cooking classes called CUSINA that empowered participants with self-esteem, a sense of community, and a skills set that coule be used to help get and keep a job. Every congregation has things they are particularly skilled at… What kinds of activities or programs could your congregation come up with? Learn more at http://www.joinpdx.com
