Congressional Update during the 111th Congress
April 13, 2010

Inside Washington

  • On April 12, Congress returned to work in Washington following its two-week spring recess.

Bread’s Issues

Take Action This Week to Protect and Strengthen Tax Credits for Working Families

  • Bread’s 2010 Offering of Letters urges Congress to protect and strengthen key tax credits — the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) and the Child Tax Credit — that help low-income working families make ends meet.
  • This Thursday, April 15, is Tax Day. Bread members are urged to call their senators and representatives this week at our special toll-free number: 1-800-826-3688.
  • Urge members of Congress to protect and strengthen key tax credits — the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) and the Child Tax Credit — that help low-income working families make ends meet.
  • In 2009, the EITC alone lifted 6.6 million Americans, including 3.3 million children, above the poverty line. It is the only provision in the tax code designed specifically to help low-income filers.

Child Nutrition Reauthorization

  • The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) is holding a series of school nutrition events throughout the country, bringing attention to the administration’s efforts to improve child nutrition programs. USDA leadership will participate in the events alongside food service workers, school officials, community and advocacy members, federal/state/local officials, parents, and students. Upcoming locations include NV, FL, MI, CT, MT, IN, and CA.

Childhood Obesity

Let’s Move initiative

  • First Lady Michelle Obama is leading a national public awareness initiative called “Let’s Move” to reduce child obesity. Let’s Move will engage individuals and communities – parents, teachers, cities, churches – in building a movement to improve child nutrition.
  • Let’s Move is focused on steps that each of us can take and will provide information and opportunities on good nutrition and physical activity. A toolkit for churches, due to be released next month, will explain ways for churches to get involved in the effort.

Task Force on Child Obesity

  • President Obama has created a new interagency Childhood Obesity Task Force, the federal complement to the Let’s Move initiative. While Let’s Move focuses on individual and community actions, the Task Force will examine government policies impacting child nutrition and implement strategies to combat child obesity.
  • Task Force membership includes the Secretaries of Agriculture, Health and Human Services, Education, and the Interior.
  • Read the Presidential Memo.

Add Your Voice on Lobby Day

Mark your calendars for Bread’s annual Lobby Day—June 15—when people from around the country will visit Washington, DC, to urge members of Congress to expand and protect the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) and the Child Tax Credit, which help low-income working families make ends meet. The day includes advocacy training, Capitol Hill visits, and worship. Visit www.bread.org/lobbyday for more information and to register.
