BFW President David Beckman video on the election

Thank you for being a part of the Bread for the World Election Action Team Against Hunger (BEAT Hunger ’08). Across the nation in town hall meetings, coffee shops, and talk radio shows, BEAT Hunger ’08 members showed up, asked questions, and demanded answers to some of the great moral issues of our time. In so doing, you demonstrated that constituents are demanding real solutions to hunger at home and abroad.

Whether you feel excited or disappointed with yesterday’s results, we know one thing for sure: hunger does not end when elections do. Here are sober statistics culled from a new poll conducted yesterday by Bread’s sister organization, The Alliance to End Hunger: Half the voters polled are living paycheck to paycheck and four out of five voters think hunger in America is still a problem. But even with the current financial crisis, three out of four voters are willing to spend additional tax dollar to cut hunger in half by 2015.

Clearly, the task before us is enormous. Hunger will only end when we change policies, programs, and conditions that allow hunger and poverty to persist.

I just recorded a post-election message for you. I invite you to watch it.

I’m asking you to continue your commitment to end hunger. I hope you will enter into a covenant with us to do one or more of the following:

  • Host an Offering of Letters at your church or campus or with your friends in 2009
  • Ask your church to become a Bread for the World Covenant Church
  • Organize or join a Bread for the World chapter in your community or campus
  • Write a letter to the editor or a post a blog entry about hunger
  • Make a special gift to Bread for the World

Changing government policy is difficult, but year after year, Bread for the World members win far-reaching changes for hungry and poor people. We must continue to faithfully engage our leaders to implement practical solutions to end hunger. Just as Moses and the Hebrew prophets called on their leaders to care for the sick and set the captives free, so, too, must we challenge our officials to end senseless hunger and poverty today.

Finally, I ask you to pray for our newly-elected leaders, especially for President-elect Barack Obama, as well as for those who continue to serve.

A new administration and new Congress set the stage for a period of very rapid change. As changes are made and hunger worsens because of the economic crisis, it is critical that we push harder to ensure due attention is paid to the needs of poor and hungry people.

We look forward to working with you, the new administration, and the new Congress to set a course for ending hunger in our time.

Thank you for faithfully walking with us on this journey.

David Beckmann
